Juilliard Opera

Juilliard Opera is the Marcus Institute’s advanced opera training program. Each year, Juilliard Opera produces three fully-staged opera productions featuring primarily Artist Diploma in Opera Studies, Master in Music, and Graduate Diploma students in principal and cover roles; however, undergraduate students are eligible to be cast in principal and cover roles as appropriate. Since 2010, Juilliard Opera has also co-produced an annual performance in Juilliard’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater featuring singers from the Marcus Institute and the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. Juilliard Opera is considered a leader in the field, and receives national attention in leading publications such as the New York Times and Opera News.

Exposure to as many musical and dramatic perspectives as possible is a hallmark of the Juilliard Opera experience. In order to prepare students for the professional world, the Marcus Institute engages a new artistic team for every opera, and seeks to bring world-renowned conductors and directors into the students’ educational experience. Recent Juilliard Opera conductors include James Levine, Alan Gilbert, Speranza Scappucci, Stephen Lord, Anne Manson, Jane Glover, and Emmanuel Villaume. Recent directors include Stephen Wadsworth, Peter Kazaras, Emma Griffin, and James Robinson.

Master Classes

The Marcus Institute invites leading guest artists and faculty members to conduct private, public, and live-streamed master classes and residencies throughout the school year. Guest artists work with Marcus Institute students in a variety of formats, from one-time master classes to several-week residencies. A few recent examples of guest artists and faculty members include Joyce DiDonato, Renée Fleming, Thomas Hampson, Gerald Finley, Isabel Leonard, Malcolm Martineau, Elly Ameling, Eric Owens, and Renata Scotto.

Recitals and Concerts

Marcus Institute undergraduate students progress from shared recitals in their first, second and third years to programming and preparing a full-length Graduation Recital in their final year of residence at Juilliard. Master of Music and Graduate Diploma students are also required to program and perform a full-length Graduation Recital in their final year.

In addition to the curricular performance opportunities mentioned above, the Marcus Institute offers the opportunity for casting in a wide range of recitals and concerts. Among these opportunities are the Liederabend Series, a series of six recitals performed in Paul Hall and jointly produced by the Marcus Institute and Collaborative Piano Department. Students are also eligible to be cast in Juilliard Songfest, an annual concert of song repertoire given in Alice Tully Hall and curated, coached, and performed with Marcus Institute Artistic Director Brian Zeger.

Other recital and concert opportunities include the Wednesday at One series in Alice Tully Hall and an annual collaboration with the New York Festival of Song. Each year, two singers are also selected by a panel of guest adjudicators to program and perform in the annual Vocal Arts Honors Recital.

Undergraduate Opera

Undergraduate singers have the opportunity to be cast in the fully-staged undergraduate opera production and opera scenes performances. Students may also participate in Juilliard Opera productions as chorus members, cover artists for principal or supporting roles, and occasionally in principal or supporting roles. All undergraduate students are required to participate in at least one Juilliard Opera chorus each year. These opera performance opportunities give undergraduate students the chance to extend their musical and dramatic work onto the stage in various capacities, as well as work with world-class directors, conductors, coaches, and professional-level singers.
